Spiders

the spider goes on spinning
in this dark moonlight
delicate smooth silk
glides through the mist

around and round she goes
floating in magical circles
weaving her deathly spell
with such precise patience

prey, i tell you that
tiny, pretty spiders
so delicate, harmless
will suck your life out

you do not heed my warnings
i scream my whispered
suggestions
to your deaf ears

Love the lines:

prey, i tell you that
tiny, pretty spiders
so delicate, harmless
will suck your life out

the word 'prey' makes an interesting double meaning with 'pray', which in turn links in with the 'whispered suggestions'

but, most of all, I love the first couple of stanzas... I used to sit in the garden, and watch the spiders go round and round, fixing their web occassionally - fascinating! :-)

I used to freak out when a spider was in my bedroom...I'd get my dad to kill them and then demand to see the dead body as evidence and would watch him flush it down the toilet! Still don't like them much!

Great poem, Water Baby. I love the contrast of screaming your whispered warnings.

annelisa - I love that you see that, it makes me *happy* he he, spiders tend to be great subjects to write about, I hear songs about them and read poetry about them, there is just so much to explore!

Mom - I'm the same way with roaches, I freak out when I see them, I'll have to tell yall the story behind that one day. Thanks much!!
